Hell’s Gate is a unique among other Kenyan parks as one is allowed to walk or cycle across its breadth. It lies in the Rift Valley province of Kenya, southwards from Lake Naivasha. Being in Rift Valley, the area has a warm and dry climate that influences the diverse and rich savannah ecosystem, wildlife and serene landscapes. It is approximately 90 kilometers from the capital city, Nairobi, and covers an area of about 68 square kilometers. The park’s main attraction is the gorge which extends towards the south and the two volcanic plugs, Fischer’s being the main one. The Park is popular for its fairly cheap park fee and activities which tourists are allowed to indulge in within the park whereby no other park allows such except one.
The climate favors thriving and maintenance of wildlife in the area. Inside the park you get to see many wildlife species, although not in plenty due to the relatively small size of the park compared to others in Kenya. Bird watchers love the experience since they get to see over 100 bird species in the park among them being the vultures, swifts, verreaux’s eagles and Augur Buzzard. You also get to see other animals like:

Other than the wildlife being an attraction to the park, there are plenty of activities which most of the visiting tourists get to enjoy and challenge their friends to undergo the activities and also there is a Maasai Cultural Centre which provide a detailed history about their culture and traditions that has made them popular in the region. The Daily Nation, local newspaper, praised the mountain climbing and described it as being thrilling, which made more people visit the park for the same activity. Other activities in the park include:
- Bird watching
- Horse riding
- Natural Spa experience
- Rock climbing
The natural spa experience is breathtaking as you get to experience naturally heated water from the hot springs. Camping is allowed despite no guns or fencing between tourists and wildlife, but the game rangers ensure maximum safety of both tourists and wildlife. Around the park, there are additional lodging facilities in Naivasha town and also other tourism activities one gets to enjoy like walks in the Crescent Island and climbing Mount Longonot.
What to see?
