The train started its journey from Delhi on January 26, 1982 as a joint initiative of the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways; it is one of the most prestigious luxury trains in the world. The Palace on Wheels luxury train operates on a special route covering popular destinations of the royal land of Rajasthan like Jaipur, Chittorgarh, Sawai Madhopur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bharatpur and the Taj City, Agra. The journey experience is truly memorable through the land of sand dunes, regal palaces and the symbol of love, ‘Taj Mahal’. This luxury train departs from Delhi Safdarjung Railway station on every Wednesday for 7 night’s journey. Apart from the month of May, June and July- it operates throughout the year. Tour Itinerary of Palace on Wheels:
Day 1: Departure from New Delhi: The train departs late in the evening from Delhi Safdarjung railway station, where the guests will be received in traditional style for a week-long luxury trip.
Day 2: Arrival & Sightseeing at the Pink City- Jaipur: The first stop of Palace on Wheels is the pink city- Jaipur, which is the capital of Rajasthan. On this day, after taking breakfast, enjoy a full day Jaipur sightseeing tour with AC covering its popular attractions including visit to Hawa Mahal (Palace of Wind), Amber Fort, City Palace Museum and Observatory. Return to train for onward journey.
Day 3: Sawai Madhopur / Chittorgarh: This day covers two major destinations, Sawai Madhopur (where one will get to visit the Ranthambhore National Park) and Chittorgarh, where you will visit the Chittorgarh Fort and enjoy special light & sound show. After the show, board the train and continue to the next journey.
Day 4: Udaipur: Arrive in Udaipur early in the morning and go for sightseeing tour of the city in AC coach. The tour will cover visits to Jag Niwas (Lake Palace) and the Jag Mandir, which appear to rise from the serene blue waters of Lake Pichhola and relaxing boat ride on Lake Pichhola. Later, return to the train for overnight journey to next stop.
Day 5: Jaisalmer: On this day, the Palace on Wheels will arrive at the Jaisalmer railway station and proceed for full day Jaisalmer sightseeing tour covering its popular attractions like, magnificent havelis (Salim Singh-ki-Haveli, Nathmalji-ki-Haveli and Patwon-ki-Haveli). Also, enjoy the sand dunes of Sam where one can enjoy camel rides. Later, have dinner in the dunes while enjoying a cultural program (especially organized). Train departs for next destination late in the night.
Day 6: Jodhpur: Early morning the train will arrive at Jodhpur station. On this day, one will enjoy a full day sightseeing tour of Jodhpur city in AC coach. The tour will cover Mehrangarh Fort and the grand palaces within Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Daulat Khana and Sileh Khana. Also, visit Jaswant Thada, a group of imperial cenotaphs made of sparkling white marble. Enjoy shopping of handicrafts items such as breeches, metal curios, embroidered shoes and silverware, tie and dye fabrics from the local market. Come back to train in the evening and it leaves for next destination.
Day 7: Bharatpur / Agra: The train arrives in Bharatpur early in the morning. After breakfast, one can visit the world famous bird sanctuary, Keoladeo Ghana National Park to spot a large number of native and migratory birds such as Siberian Cranes, Egrets, migratory Water Fowl and much more. After the wildlife tour, the train will proceed for Agra. Here, one will be taken for a sightseeing tour in AC coach. Visit the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal-one of the eight wonders of the world. One can also go shopping for popular artifacts and sweets. Return to the Palace-on-Wheels and the train departs for Delhi late in the night.
Day 8: Delhi: It is the last spot, rather the end of the weeks’ long journey creating some wonderful memories of India.
